Mal Cottle heads our Hygiene department, and in that capacity, not only is he especially trained to clean, scale and maintain your oral hygiene, a significant part of his role is to educate and empower patients to achieve and maintain better oral health.

At VAN DER WALT DENTAL we provide motivational and informative talks to various community groups in  Bundaberg and district.

Ante Natal and Young Mothers

Brief talks can include a short video presentation and discussions. Topics covered include:

  • Brushing techniques and flossing demonstrations.
  • Demonstrations of various tooth brushes and dental products - good and bad and why.
  • Tooth paste comparisons and why they work.
  • Saliva in the mouth as a super nutrient enhancing the protective aspects of saliva.
  • Teething.
  • Dummies and finger sucking.
  • Q and A time.

Daycare and Kindergarten

Brief talks with puppets and musical interludes followed by active brushing sessions. Topics covered include:

  • Why we have teeth.
  • What do we use them for.
  • How do we look after them.
  • Sample showbag of toothpaste, toothbrush and stickers to take home.
  • Colour in work book for follow up at home.

Preps and Primary Schools

Brief engaging talks to involve and motivate children. Topics covered and depth of discussion is relevant to age - (Preps to year 7).

  • Why we have teeth.
  • What teeth do we use for what (mid to senior primary)
  • How do we look after them - brushing and flossing demonstration.
  • Sample showbag to take home with dental products.
  • A work book for follow up in class or at home.
  • Comparative anatomy using real skulls (senior primary).
  • A controlled class room brushing session in a hygienic manner.
Adult Community Groups

Informative talks on aspects requested, with resources available.
